A baseball hero's dream dashed by red tape. That's the unfortunate reality for Miguel Rojas, the beloved Los Angeles Dodgers infielder, who will not be representing Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
But why? The reason is a contentious insurance issue, as revealed by a league source to The Athletic. This news comes as a shock to fans, especially after Rojas shared an emotional Instagram story expressing his sadness and disappointment.
Age seems to be the main factor here. At 37, Rojas is in his final major-league season, and his recent history of lower-body injuries has complicated matters. These injuries, including a hernia surgery in 2024, have made insurance companies hesitant to provide coverage. And without insurance, Rojas' $5.5 million MLB salary wouldn't be protected if he were to sustain injuries during the WBC.
This isn't the first time insurance issues have affected players' participation in the WBC. Fellow Venezuelan and Houston Astros star, Jose Altuve, and Puerto Rico's Carlos Correa are also unable to join their national teams due to similar concerns. In 2023, Dodgers' legend Clayton Kershaw even offered to pay for his own insurance policy to play for Team USA, but ultimately withdrew.
And here's where it gets controversial: Venezuela's manager Omar López, who is also the Astros' bench coach, shed light on the situation. He stated that players with recent injuries are now considered 'chronic' cases, making insurance approval more challenging. This has left many players in limbo, waiting for insurance clearance to represent their countries.
