Squire & Partners has unveiled a transformative vision for the mothballed Stratford Sphere site, a 2.05-hectare plot between Stratford Station and Stratford International. The proposal, put to consultation on behalf of Hallmark Property Group, envisions a vibrant urban oasis that will redefine the area's cultural landscape.
At the heart of the development, a 'yard' will serve as a dynamic hub, featuring events, public art, and a two-storey circular pavilion inspired by the surrounding railway architecture. This pavilion will house 1,850 square meters of food and beverage facilities, creating a vibrant social space.
The scheme includes three towers, each with a unique architectural identity. These towers will range from 31 to 47 storeys, offering a diverse mix of accommodations. Above the mixed-use ground floor, the development will provide 1,600 hotel bedrooms and 2,100 shared living apartments, catering to various lifestyles.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the proposal is the introduction of new pedestrian routes. A footbridge will connect Stratford Town Centre to the site, ensuring seamless access. Additionally, step-free access through Montfichet Road will enhance the site's accessibility and integration with the surrounding neighborhood.
The development will also bring a cultural renaissance to the area. According to Olga Gomez, a partner at Squire & Partners, the scheme will create two cultural venues with capacities ranging from 1,200 to 4,300 people. The Stratford Sphere site once held ambitions to become home to a 21,500-capacity Sphere-shaped arena, designed by Populous and backed by Madison Square Garden (MSG). However, these plans were thwarted by a planning refusal from London Mayor Sadiq Khan and a decision to refer the scheme to a planning inspector, leading to MSG's withdrawal.
Squire & Partners' proposal, however, takes a different approach, focusing on creating a public space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The design aims to open up the site, creating new public spaces, green infrastructure, and pedestrian connections. It will also include an education hub and performance venues, fostering a sense of community and cultural engagement.
The development's impact extends beyond the site itself. By introducing new pedestrian routes and enhancing the area's connectivity, it will contribute to the overall transformation of Stratford, one of London's fastest-evolving destinations. The scheme promises to create a distinctive new destination, rooted in Stratford's character and future aspirations.
As the consultation progresses, the project is expected to submit a planning application to Newham Council this autumn. Before construction begins, food and beverage uses will be introduced to the site, further enhancing its appeal and functionality.
