Imagine this: a legendary F1 team dismisses a talented driver based on something as trivial as his appearance. This astonishing claim suggests that McLaren passed on the opportunity to sign Robert Kubica as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate for the 2008 Formula 1 season simply because, as it was reported, “his nose was too big.” But here’s where it gets controversial—was this a serious consideration or just a joke?
This intriguing assertion comes from Matt Bishop, who served as the communications chief for McLaren during that time. While he couldn’t confirm whether Martin Whitmarsh, then McLaren's chief executive, was jesting about Kubica's nose, it raises questions about how such personal attributes could influence high-stakes decisions in sports.
Robert Kubica, hailed as one of the most underappreciated talents in modern F1, has only one grand prix victory to his name—a win at the Canadian Grand Prix in 2008 with the BMW-Sauber team. Tragically, his potential to achieve more was curtailed by a severe crash during a rally in February 2011, which left him with life-altering injuries and significantly impacted his racing career.
After finding success in rallying, Kubica made a comeback to Formula 1 with Williams in 2019, where he had the distinction of scoring the team's sole point that season at the German Grand Prix. Now at 41 years old, he recently celebrated an emotional win at the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours race with Ferrari earlier this year.
Interestingly, Kubica disclosed in 2018 that he had a contract to join Ferrari’s F1 team for the 2012 season, a deal that tragically fell through due to his accident.
At the end of the 2007 season, McLaren was on the lookout for a replacement for Fernando Alonso after a tumultuous year that led to the two-time world champion’s exit. Ultimately, they opted for Heikki Kovalainen, who switched places with Alonso after impressing in his debut season with Renault.
Bishop, who worked at McLaren from 2008 to 2017 before moving to Aston Martin, shared this eyebrow-raising anecdote on his podcast, "And Colossally That’s History!" He recounted Whitmarsh expressing concerns regarding Kubica’s physical appearance when considering candidates to partner Hamilton.
He stated, "I remember that Whitmarsh said at that time that one of the problems with Kubica, as a possible 2008 driver for McLaren, was that his nose was too big. He said that." When Bishop was asked humorously whether Whitmarsh believed Kubica's nose posed an aerodynamic issue, he laughed and replied, "Aesthetic, I think!"
Bishop suggested that Whitmarsh might have been joking, mentioning, "Martin could sometimes be funny like that. He thought drivers should look a certain way." This attitude perhaps stemmed from Ron Dennis, McLaren’s then-boss, who had a reputation for being particular about the image of his drivers. However, Bishop noted, "to be fair to Ron, I never heard him complaining about Robert’s nose…"
Richard Williams, a fellow presenter, chimed in, remarking on the absurdity of focusing on Kubica’s nose, especially in today’s F1 environment where young drivers often resemble boy band members, seemingly having undergone rigorous scrutiny regarding their looks.
After 25 years with McLaren, Whitmarsh departed in 2014, followed by Dennis in 2017.
Reflecting on the severity of his 2011 accident, Kubica shared last year on the Gurulandia podcast that he endured 42 fractures and lost three-quarters of his blood in the crash. He recalled, "Honestly, I remember little of what happened because I was in a coma for so long. I arrived at the hospital with one
