After Exploring NCAA Possibilities, Britain’s Top Breaststroker Chooses Loughborough: A Unique Story
In a surprising turn of events, British swimming sensation Filip Nowacki has decided to stay home and compete for Loughborough University in England, rather than pursuing NCAA opportunities. This decision comes after a year of exploration and consideration, as Nowacki, aged 18, showcased his talent by breaking British Age Records and winning medals at various international competitions.
The British Collegiate Sporting System: A Unique Opportunity
Loughborough University offers a unique blend of sports excellence and academic pursuits. It houses a National Performance Center, providing a high-level training environment, and a non-NPC program focused on university sports. While the British system may not be as intense as the US model, it still offers a competitive collegiate championship meet called BUCS, which many Loughborough swimmers participate in.
A Home-Grown Talent
GB Aquatics, formerly known as British Swimming, has recently celebrated keeping its top prospects at home. Jacob Mills, who also considered training in the US, was announced as a Manchester-based talent. Nowacki's decision to stay home allows him to focus solely on breaststroke events, avoiding the challenge of finding a third event.
Nowacki's Impressive Career
Nowacki's swimming career began in 2023, where he broke the British Age Record for 15-year-olds in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.05) and won medals in all three breaststroke distances at the Commonwealth Youth Games. In 2024, he claimed silver at the European Junior Championships in the 200 breaststroke. His breakthrough came in 2025, winning gold in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the World Junior Championships, along with relay medals, and adding five European Junior Championship medals to his collection.
A Rare Talent from the Crown Dependency
Born on Jersey in the Channel Islands, Nowacki is a rare talent from a small Crown Dependency with a population of over 100,000, known more for its cows than swimmers. He represented Jersey at the Commonwealth Games, where different parts of Great Britain compete independently, and has yet to win any medals in swimming.
Nowacki's Training Journey
Nowacki started his career training at Tigers Jersey under Nathan Jegou and later moved to Millfield in England, training under Keiron Piper. His best times include 50m breaststroke (27.18 LCM, 26.31 SCM), 100m breaststroke (59.20 LCM, 57.36 SCM), and 200m breaststroke (2:07.32 LCM, 2:02.96 SCM).
A Star in Short Course Swimming
Nowacki's short course swimming abilities are impressive, and he would undoubtedly be a star in the NCAA. However, his decision to stay home allows him to focus on his strengths in breaststroke without the added pressure of a third event.
The British Breaststroke Contingent
With Adam Peaty's career winding down, the British breaststroke contingent has seen a slight decline, but there is still a lot of talent on the rise. Nowacki has been the country's best performer over the last 12 months in all three distances, joining Gregory Butler and Max Morgan as the top British breaststrokers, with the potential to take the team beyond 2028.
International Influence in Collegiate Swimming
As the US debates the influence of international swimmers in their collegiate system, similar discussions are taking place abroad. Federations are keen to keep their top athletes at home, and GB Aquatics has recently secured two significant 'recruiting battles'.
